The Ontario Mining Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Duncan Middlemiss as Chair of the Board of Directors, while Peter Xavier takes on the position of Vice Chair. Both positions were confirmed at the association's Annual General Meeting, which was held on June 15, 2017. The meeting offered an opportunity for OMA members to express their appreciation to outgoing Chair, Marc Lauzier, Mine General Manager at Goldcorp Porcupine Gold Mines, and applaud his commitment to fostering a resilient and effective association.

"We are grateful to Marc for his outstanding service to the OMA and especially for his passionate commitment to mine safety, promoting a competitive energy policy, and communicating with the public through initiatives such as So You Think You Know Mining," said Chris Hodgson, OMA President. "It is fortunate that we will continue to have the benefit of Marc's insights and advice, as he remains a member of the board and executive. At the same time, we're excited to move forward under the guidance of Duncan and Peter, both of whom are veteran industry leaders with deep expertise and commitment to mining excellence."

OMA's new Chair, Duncan Middlemiss, is President and Chief Executive Officer of Wesdome Gold Mines. Previously, he was the President and Chief Executive Officer, and a director of St. Andrew Goldfields Ltd. ("SAS") until its acquisition by Kirkland Lake Gold Inc. in January 2016. Mr. Middlemiss joined SAS in July 2008 as General Manager and Vice President Operations, later assuming the role of Chief Operating Officer. He was appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer in October 2013. He earned a B. Sc. in mining engineering at Queen's University in 1989 and worked for Inco Ltd. (now Vale Canada Ltd.) as Mine Design Engineer until 1995. At that time, he joined Barrick Gold Inc. at their Holt-McDermott Mine, where he held the position of Chief Mine Engineer. In 2002 he joined Foxpoint Resources (now Kirkland Lake Gold Inc.) where he was instrumental in overseeing the rehabilitation, development, and commencement of production at the Macassa Mine beginning as Engineering and Production Manager, and later as Mine Manager. Mr. Middlemiss is a native of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, and has extensive experience in the mining of gold deposits in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt.

"Having served on our Board for an extended period, Duncan is familiar with the workings of the OMA and understands the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead," said Chris Hodgson. "He possesses the vision, knowledge, skills and passion that will drive new accomplishments, while continuing to build constructive relationships and enhancing the credibility of our sector."

Duncan Middlemiss will be supported by OMA Vice Chair, Peter Xavier. As Vice President, Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations, A Glencore Company, Peter has overall accountability for the underground mines Nickel Rim South and Fraser, Strathcona Mill and Sudbury Smelter. A graduate of Laurentian University's Mining Engineering program, Peter's previous key positions were Nickel Rim South Mine Director, Thayer Lindsley Mine Manager and Strathcona Mill Manager.

As OMA embarks on ambitious new projects, including the Target Zero + campaign, it will benefit from the counsel and ideas of its extraordinary leaders.
