PRIDE, PASSION AND RELEVANCE

CIM has a proud history of over 120 years representing an exciting and vital industry. CIM ‎is made up of people who are passionate about our industry. Passion and pride are essential for CIM and Canada to be a leader in the global mining industry but it is not enough. Ensuring that what we do in CIM to promote the industry is relevant is key to leading, impacting, and ultimately making a difference where it counts.

This talk will focus on new and existing activities that CIM at large is promoting that are aligned with the challenges in our industry. Part of this talk will engage the audience to participate in identifying what areas they think CIM should be engaging in to maintain relevancy.

Roy Slack is a professional engineer with over 35 years experience in mine construction, design, and development, on projects throughout North America and around the world. Roy is a graduate of Queen’s University in Kingston, with a degree in Mining Engineering.

In 1998 he started Cementation’s operations in North America as President. Cementation is a mine contracting and engineering firm that provides design-build and construction management services to the mining sector. In 2017 the company was recognized as the Gold Winner of Safest Employer in Canada in the natural resources sector.

In 2008 Roy was awarded the Engineer’s Medal for Entrepreneurship by the Professional Engineers of Ontario and in 2009 he was given the Metal Mining Society Award by the Canadian Institute of Mining (CIM). In 2012 he was named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International. Also in 2017 Nipissing University bestowed upon him an Honorary Doctorate. In 2018 he was inducted into the SAMSSA Hall of Fame and in April of 2019 he was appointed President of CIM.
