The Use and Mis-Use of Explicit and Empirical Data in the Mining Sector - featuring speaker Brian Buss

CIM Sudbury Branch Webinar - February GMM

Thu, Feb, 18, 2021 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM (EDT)

Brian W. Buss

President, BWB Consulting Services Inc.

Drawing on his extensive experiences in mine operations, engineering, project management, and project evaluation, Mr. Buss will provide insights into the uses and mis-uses of explicitly generated data and their relationships to empirically acquired data sets. He will highlight challenges faced by the engineer with over reliance on computer simulations and design tools that may lead us to confuse the concepts of precision with accuracy in production and cost forecasting. He will present empirical data analysis tools and techniques that provide a means of rapidly providing reasonably accurate forecasts of productive capacity and associated costs. He will discuss empirical tools as benchmarks and a means of calibrating explicit tools so the engineer can improve his accuracy while maintaining precision.

BIO: Mr. Buss is a Professional Mining Engineer and Project Manager with over 30 years of progressive experience on 4 continents. Upon graduation from Queen’s University at Kingston, Mr. Buss gained operational experience as a miner and shiftboss in the Witwatersrand gold mining district in South Africa. He developed a technical specialization in rock mechanics and further advanced this skill set on his return to Canada to work with Inco Ltd (now Vale.) During some 20 years with Vale he continued to expand his technical experiences into mine engineering and planning. He ultimately moved into the field of project management, holding ever increasing levels of responsibility. Prior to leaving Vale he held the position of General Manager- Mining Projects with accountability for advancing and
constructing underground mining projects in Vale-Canada’s portfolio.

Mr. Buss then took on an executive role in the junior gold mining sector as Vice President – Project Development with Lake Shore Gold (now Tahoe Resources) in the historic Timmins Gold Camp. Mr. Buss is currently President of BWB Consulting Services Inc. where he provides strategic guidance to mining companies on operational efficiency, mineral deposit economics, and project evaluation. He provides expert advice and due diligence reviews in support of Merger and Acquisition activities.

Mr. Buss actively volunteers with industry, academic, and professional organizations as well as community based volunteer organizations. He is a member of PEO, CIM, PDAC, and PMI. He holds a board position with the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation and maintains close contacts with the mining departments at Queen’s University, the University of Toronto, and McGill University.
