A CIM-NB Technical Presentation was held at lunchtime on March 12, 2014 at the UNB Fredericton Campus Department of Earth Sciences.  Tom Healy, president of Kamcot International Ltd., spoke about “Mining Metamorphosis” which included an introduction to the current plight of the mining sector and some of the challenges faced by our industry and then spoke about finding creative solutions to allow mining projects to be developed in a sustainable manner. His insight from over four decades of international experience included discussions from the exploration, design, development, operation and closure aspects of mining operations with respect to economic, social and environmental considerations.  The question has been asked “Is a pound of copper (or any metal) worth more than a pound of salmon”? The sweet spot for future mining operations may be towards smaller, multigenerational operations which have more sustainable and longer term benefits to both companies and the local communities.  Over 40 students, faculty, regulators, consultants, industry and prospectors enjoyed pizza and beverages during the presentation, provided by CIM-NB.
